This is a simplified question and answer
section on the operation of emergency
procedures in the workplace.
Q. What information do I need to give
visitors with regard to emergency
procedures?
A. This is dependent on circumstances
and duration of the visit. Visitors who
will be accompanied at all times need
only be made aware of what an alarm
means and how and where to evacuate to.
This could usefully be relayed on the
back of a printed visitor's pass.
Q. How often should I rehearse
evacuation?
A. Fire drills are recommended to take
place at least once a year, and
preferably every six months. If a fire
certificate is in force, this will
specify the frequency. It would be good
practice to adopt the same
recommendation for other emergency
procedures.
Q. If the workplace is open to the
public, how can I ensure the evacuation
will be carried out successfully?
A. Members of staff should be nominated
to be responsible for directing people
via the evacuation route in the event of
an emergency. If possible these members
of staff should be clearly identifiable.
